COMMUNITY GARDEN

Wakeman Town Farm & Sustainability Center

BY: Christy C

Westport, CT

HOW WOULD YOU USE THIS GRANT TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?

This community farm’s outreach has doubled every year since 2011. We are currently building a commercial kitchen to accommodate the demand for cooking classes, kids' programs, homesteading workshops, films about healthy eating, community suppers, CSAs, and more. Each time we add community programs, our costs rise, so our goal is to use the grant to bring in teachers and experts—cheese-makers, organic chefs, mushroom growers, master gardeners, etc. to teach hands-on, farm-related classes. Our mission is to expand the farm’s reach to a greater segment of the population, including more Westport Public School students, which will, in turn, allow this nonprofit educational center to earn enough revenues to be self-sustaining. Once, Westport was a thriving agricultural center, but most area farms are now luxury homes. Wakeman is one of the last remaining farms in the area, and would use the grant to offer a wide range of programs that keep agricultural education alive for a new generation.
