COMMUNITY GARDEN

La Mesa Verde

BY: Jamie C

San Jose, CA

HOW WOULD YOU USE THIS GRANT TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?

La Mesa Verde (LMV) has created a bilingual network of low-income gardeners in San Jose, California, installing more than 450 home gardens and providing training and education to participants. A grant would fund a sustainable compost project to improve soil in over 80 home gardens that have been installed by LMV. LMV provides everything necessary for a low-income family to grow organic vegetables, including raised bed materials, drip irrigation, seeds, and a yearlong gardening and cooking course. LMV focuses on gardening and cooking skills that build participants’ knowledge to eat what they grow, resulting in a growing community of people excited about healthy eating. Current LMV funding covers soil and supplies to build gardens for 50 new families a year, but does not include amending established home gardens’ soil. We want to ensure that LMV gardeners can continue to put fresh, organic produce on the table and increase their knowledge of sustainable healthy food practices.
