SCHOOL GARDEN

Friends Academy Garden

Dartmouth, MA

HOW WOULD YOU USE THIS GRANT TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?

Since 2009, the Friends Academy Garden has been supplying local food pantries and a soup kitchen with fresh produce free of charge. In each of the past four years, the garden has yielded more than 5000 pounds of produce: 2012 -- 5736 lbs.; 2013 -- 5484 lbs.; 2014 -- 5951 lbs.; 2015 -- 5978 lbs. In addition, we have hosted gardening classes for local groups and school garden coordinators. In our ongoing effort to provide fresh vegetables to the neediest in the community, we would use grant money to cover costs of seeds, fertilizers and seed-starting mixes, which together can exceed $1000 per year. Row cover, plug trays and some tools need to be replaced from time to time and because we have a three-to-four season garden, our tools and materials get quite a workout. A large grant from Seed Savers would allow to plan ahead with the confidence that comes with knowing our expenses will be largely covered for years to come.
