Antioch Discovery Garden - Fort Smith, Arkansas

BY: Charolette T

Fort Smith, AR

Antioch Discovery Garden, situated in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Fort Smith AR and near three public schools having 95% or more participation rates in free/reduced meals, seeks to: 1) Educate children about the life cycle of plants as living things and healthy food sources. 2) Improve family unities and foster wellness by sustaining changes in eating habits that stem from the foods children helped grow and, 3) Exhibit leadership from schools, churches, healthcare providers, neighbors and City to solve local food insecurity. Students will plant, tend and harvest their yield. They will follow the harvest to a local food pantry, box up what they grew with recipes and ingredients to make budget-friendly meals to take home, and follow a number of these boxes to low income senior living centers to witness how the bounty of their efforts helps others. This grant will fund an irrigation system, child programming materials and parental learning incentives to buoy healthier choices.
