HOW WOULD YOU USE THIS GRANT TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?
This grant would support the operations of North Hills Community Outreach (NHCO)’s community organic garden which produces fresh fruit and vegetables for low-income families who receive food from NHCO’s three food pantries.
An abundance of research suggests that inadequate food or lack of healthy food can have a detrimental effect on the physical, mental and emotional health of both adults and children. Therefore, NHCO has always been committed to providing healthy food options to families using its food pantries. These families live in households earning 150% or less of the federal poverty level ($30,240 for a family of three in 2016).
In the 2016 growing season, the Garden provided a record 4500 pounds of fresh organic produce to NHCO food pantries and in doing so improved the nutrition and overall health of 1368 low-income families (more than 4100 people) who use our food pantries.
The Garden also has a strong nutrition education program in place for local children (see #2).
